Iowa collectors have a few registration options for older vehicles, and many assume an antique plate comes with the same rules as a classic car insurance policy. In Iowa, that isn’t always the case. The registration rules and your policy’s usage rules are two separate things, and the stricter one is often your insurance.
What Iowa Law Says About Antique Registration
Under Iowa Code § 321.115, a motor vehicle that is 25 years old or older may be registered as an antique vehicle. Owners can also display authentic Iowa plates from the vehicle’s model year, as long as the current plates and registration card are carried in the vehicle and available if an officer asks.
Iowa also offers a “limited use” registration for certain older trucks, truck tractors, road tractors, and motor homes used only for exhibition or educational purposes.
Plates vs. Policy: How They Compare
| Question | Iowa Antique Registration | Typical Classic Car Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Is there an age requirement? | 25 years or older | Varies by insurer, and some cover newer collectibles |
| Are there usage limits? | Antique registration for cars doesn’t spell out exhibition-only use | Usually limited to pleasure use, shows, and club events, often with mileage limits |
| Can it be a daily driver? | Registration rules are only one piece | Generally no |
| Storage expectations? | Not addressed by registration | Often requires a locked, enclosed garage |
Common Questions From Collectors
If my plates allow it, can I drive my classic anywhere?
Your registration may not restrict you, but your classic policy probably does. Using the car outside those terms could create coverage problems after a claim.
What if I want to drive it more often?
Talk with your agent. Some insurers offer higher mileage plans, and for regular use, a standard auto policy may fit better.
